Holy Spirit

The Person of the Holy Spirit
I believe that the Holy Spirit is the third person of the godhead, coequal, coeternal, and of the same essence with full equality with the Father and the Son (Matt 28:19; Eph 4:4-6; 1 Pet 1:1-2). The Holy Spirit demonstrates divine works by knowing the thoughts of God (1 Cor 2:10-11) and through regeneration of believers (Titus 3:5). He is a person and he does personal works such as teaching and reminding (John 14:26), bears witness (John 15:26), guides (John 16:13), has a mind (Rom 8:27), has a will (1 Cor 2:11), loves (Rom 15:30), can be grieved (Eph 4:30), cries out (Gal 4:6), leads and witnesses (Rom 8:16), shows the way (Heb 9:8), and speaks (Rev 22:17).

The Work of the Holy Spirit
I believe that the Holy Spirit was at work in creation (Gen 1:2; Job 26:13; Psa 33:6). He was the empowering Spirit to Moses and the seventy elders (Num 11:17, 25-28), Gideon (Jdg 6:11-12), Saul (1 Sam 10:1, 6), and David (1 Sam 16:13). He was the Spirit of Prophecy through Balaam (Num 24:2), Saul (1 Sam 10:10-11); Elisha (2 Kings 2:9-15), Ezekiel (Ezek 2:2-8), and Amos (Amos 7:14). He was the promised Spirit for the prophets (Deut 18:15, 18), Messiah (Isa 11:2; 42:1), and for all people (Isa 32:15; Ezek 36:27; Zech 12:10). I believe that the Holy Spirit was at work in the life of Jesus. The Holy Spirit was at work in the conception of Jesus (Matt 1:18, 20; Luke 1:35). The Holy Spirit led Jesus (Matt 4:1; Mark 1:12; Acts 1:2), empowered Jesus (Luke 4:1, Acts 10:38) to cast out demons (Matt 12:28), and filled Jesus with joy (Luke 10:21). I believe that the Holy Spirit was at work in the beginning of the Church. The Holy Spirit baptized and filled believers (Acts 1:5, 8; 2:4) and directed the believers (Acts 8:29; 10:19; 13:1-4). I believe that the Holy Spirit is at work in unbelievers restraining sin (2 Thes 2:6-7), preservation of righteousness, and the postponement of judgment (2 Pet 3; Rev 6). The Holy Spirit convicts unbelievers of sin (John 16:8-11; Acts 7:51) and calls unbelievers to salvation (1 Tim 1:6-9; Rev 22:17). I believe that the Holy Spirit is at work in believers by permanently indwelling them (Ezek 36:27; Rom 8:9; 1 Cor 6:19), baptizing them at conversion (Eph 4:4-5), giving of spiritual gifts (1 Cor 12-14), continually filling them (Eph 5:18), with evidence of on-going results of the fruit of the Spirit (Gal 5:22-23; Col 3:12-17; Eph 4:23-5:21). Spiritual gifts may be evidenced by sign gifts, such as speaking in tongues, for some believers (Acts 2; Acts 4) and may be evidenced by different signs in other believers (James 2:14-26).
